Tretinoin or Retinol?

I´ve been thinking about using Tret as a way to clear my skin. It is already more or less clear but I still have some scarring, occasional small breakouts and my infraorbital skin is a bit red.

Should I use Retinol instead of Tretinoin? Its easier to get (no prescription needed) and weaker secondary effects.
