Does a BSSO actually move the mandible forward? From diagrams it looks like it just makes it longer by making the cut, and placing the anterior piece of the cut a few mm's forward. Though the most posterior point of the mandible does not seem to be advanced.

The posterior portion is not changed, so yes, I guess technically the mandible is being made longer. But nobodies problem is that the posterior portion of the mandible is too far back lmao. So a short mandible is going to be recessed. I would argue lengthening the mandible IS bringing it forward.
