My theory is that doing one or some of these things will make you look more interesting, masculine, feminine, tough, whatever your goal is. Scars, tattoos, accessories, etc can all add mystery, personality, character, and separating you from others that look basic.

You are right for the most part. But there is such a wide variety of things you can do so you can’t generalize. These things can make you look more interesting and mysterious, more masculine or more feminine. Just like how a buzz cut will ALWAYS make you look more masculine even if you look good with long hair. But a good amount of girls love long hair on guys. For example I wore a this necklace someone gave me just for a couple days and 3-4 women complimented it and said they’re into that type of stuff. Accessories can be conversation starters if anything.
