Ok so i've been using mouthgard for a while at the gym due to it increasing strength (not gonna go into details but that's basically what it does when you clench your jaw during sets) and i've been noticing masseters increasing in size and wanted to know if it can increase bonemass in the long term since i've heard chewing hard things does. Also wanted to know if it had downsides long term

No downsides. It's not really gonna increase your strength that's just some iqlet cope but is good for training masseters.

Nah and training jaw muscles is pretty shit
when you say shit do you mean that it doesnt do much or that it has downsides (im gonna still be using the mouthgard for the strength benefit)

Your body automatically recruits nearby muscles. Jaw is not nearby anything and it's not something that you can force for extra effects. I think that if it had that big of an effect all the pro bodybuilders would be using it.

Its pretty popular in the sbl community and there are studies on jaw clenching recruiting more motor units than not clenching

I mean I guess you can do it but this is a very new trend. The new wave of science based lifters are just citing random studies and cherry picking where bodybuilding sbl's have been around forever and never use mouthguards. Have you ever seen someone above 200 lbs doing this or is it just a bunch of teenagers?

That's on hockey athletes, not trained bodybuilders/powerlifters. Can you show me a single wr lift that was set using a mouthguard?

The biggest sbls are prob trell bankston, elijah mundy, dev lifts but they dont use a mouthguard (most of them say you can but it wont make that big of a difference) I find that going to failure is easier with a mouthguard is easier since you dont feel as much pain but thats prob not an issue for most people

I agree with them. Nothing wrong with doing it but it won't make a miraculous difference. Do whatever you like most though.
