Not true. Lords and nobles being the ones who did the fighting was a thing that existed during parts of the medieval period in Europe, but conscript armies have been the default throughout history. Romans enlisted normal people, for instance.

You are right. Conscription did exist in classical antiquity.
But Roman armies were pretty far from masses of poorly trained peasants and social rejects.
Service as a Legionary was a respectable profession
