It was clear. I read that he took imam alis hand in big group and named him as his successor. Lets be honest the sahaba were people and not holy. They could have been controlled by satan. So i wouldn't take their word

after the death of the prophet they had their second favorite person alive. They obeyed the prophet until he was alive. Omar even killed the prophets daughter(fatemeh). See the disrespect towards his family.
