What makes life worth engaging with, even when it’s hard?
The thing that makes life worth engaging with, when it's hard, is hope, the hope of progress and ego. The belief that you'll overcome what is making it hard. If I were to name things, I'd say family is something that could make life worth engaging with even when it's hard. However, It's challenges or short term goals that give a man purpose. For a man without one, is not alive at all. To exist is to have goals or something to work towads and something to understand.

What feels meaningful regardless of recognition or reward?
Challenge, temporary challenges, overcoming things that I thought were not possible makes me feel good regardless of others recognition. Things I would do even if nobody was alive is train. For example, starving myself for days, even though I was blamed and punished for it, I felt good doing it. There have been days where I have lied about eating just to take the worry of my mother that I am starving. Short term goals, temporary challenges. Doing things I thought I was not capable of doing or had doubt towards.

What would make suffering feel not wasted?
Suffering would not feel wasted if it was birthed progress. Progress of any sort. Suffering however, also teaches one the value of not suffering. Starving teaches the value of food and being full, feeling the taste of food that rests on your tongue.
