Curious where people actually locate their primary sense of self.
This forum talks about identity constantly, usually (and unsurprisingly) through looks, but most people never stop to check where their identity actually sits.

It’s between intellect and conciousness, the only thing I can really self identify with is high metacognition, my personality shifts very often and I don’t have anything I identify with strongly other than my ability to view my own thinking, so mostly my identity is internal, my external identity shifts too much for me to resonate with it

I like to believe I think about everything even trivial stuff more than others but I’m most likely wrong.

My personality, thoughts, consciousness, and intellect are all just my brain.
My outer body is nothing but a vessel. My real true self is my brain.

None of these
Identity of mine lies down into my current self, I m nothing more then a man and my identity only exist within my consciousness
but even then it's not something I identify by.

IF you do mean social and with people, primarily I identify by

Intellect / intelligence

Hard to tell I'm very detached from my body, mind and from society.
My identity is prob a mix of body and "sole"
I obviously don't care a about role in soyciety, I'm having trouble defining all of the options

Interesting question. Can you pick an option in your poll? I'd love to see what you identify with/as the most.

For me, it’s consciousness beyond a shadow of a doubt.

I never used to think about these things, until I realised that I can observe all of the other variables change.
The body is never the same, as every cell replaces itself, moods always shift, opinions evolve, and thoughts come and go without me choosing them. Made me think that anything I can watch fluctuate ultimately can’t be what I am.

The only variable that doesn’t change is the fact that I’m aware of all of it. The awareness itself remains constant, while everything else orbits it.
Once I noticed that everything is downstream from consciousness, it changed my whole perspective.

Ofc all of the other variables still matter as well, but they feel more like interfaces rather than the core layer to me.

Thoughts/inner self

Consciousness and awareness are vague and don’t show who someone truly is like thoughts do.

These are all pretty introspective thoughts. I've noticed how everything can change, as you said, but I've also never stayed at the same level of "consciousness" my entire life. As you get experience going through life, your brain absorbs all this new information and makes changes, for better or for worse. I feel like I've become more conscious over time. I don't know how to quantify consciousness, though.

I agree with you, my clarity within consciousness has also developed, although I mostly classify that as the content within consciousness, namely awareness, self-reflection, emotional regulation, pattern recognition, insight, etc.

In that sense, you absolutely can become “more conscious” as you accumulate experience and reduce blind spots.
What did you mean by this?
By interfaces, I mean layers you operate through, not what you fundamentally are.

The body is a biological interface, personality is a social interface, and thoughts are a narrative interface.
They’re real, useful, and they matter in day-to-day life, but they feel more like tools or lenses than the underlying constant.

Consciousness feels like the core layer because it’s the only thing present regardless of which interface is active. You can change your body, accentuate parts of your personality, lose confidence, gain insight, or feel “less conscious”, but there is still awareness of all of that happening.

Thoughts/inner self

Consciousness and awareness are vague and don’t show who someone truly is like thoughts do.
I get the reasoning here since thoughts feel concrete as they’re loud and feel present, but I don't believe they’re fundamental.
If thoughts showed who you truly are, then wouldn't you become a different self every time your mood, beliefs, or inner dialogue changed?

You can observe a thought arise, contradict it, suppress it, dissolve it or do whatever, which means it can’t be the observer itself.
Thoughts are content, but awareness is the context in which they appear.

Consciousness isn’t really vague, it’s just upstream of everything else. But I will say that it is harder to notice because it doesn’t change, while thoughts constantly do.

This is a good question. I would say for most of my life it’s been consciousness, but as I’ve gotten older it’s increasingly been looks/body as I’ve found that to give me grounding. Growing up I was very disembodied and anhedonic and this caused problems, now I do everything I can to align myself on all levels.
