We rot in the ground and the electrical patterns that generated our conscious experience cease.

What if we get reincarnated?
Humans have a biological fear of death. Pain and sadness is caused by loosing loved ones.

To ease this fear and pain, all cultures have independently come up with all possible broad categories of beliefs.
  • Our consciousness goes somewhere else after we die
    • To a pleasant place - Heaven
    • To a neutral place - Purgatory, etc.
    • To a bad place - Hell
  • Our consciousness stays here after we die
    • In physical reality - Reincarnation
    • In another dimension - Ghost/Spirits
Intuition, Gut Feelings, Memories, Talks with "God", Talks with "Spiritual beings", are all easy to create experiences of in the human brain because of how faulty and error prone the human brain is.

On one hand we are very adapt at absorbing cultural knowledge, which allows us to offload cognition to culture, and learn and "know" far more than other animal species. It is also a weakness that causes our brains to easily become deceived and believe untrue things. It's because we don't have hardcoded knowledge as much as learned knowledge.

But there is good news. Technology is increasing at an exponential pace, and so is Ai. There is a very good chance that we will have the technology to reverse aging in our life-times. We can already extend the lives of animals, in a number of ways by significant amounts.

If this technology converts to humans then we can say extend human life a few more decades. Those few extra decades gives scientists from around the world, and artificial super intelligence which is working non-stop time to come up with solutions to reverse even more damage, allowing us to live longer and even indefinitely. The heat death of the universe is not in-fact inevitable but that's another discussion.

As a concrete example one type of cellular damage that is part of the process of aging is the ends of DNA strands gradually depleting when cells divide. A solution to this is inducing the body into telomerase, which adds back caps to the end of DNA strands.

Another type of damage in aging is the accumulation of senescent cells that have stopped working correctly. Senolytics (which you can already buy) help the body eliminate these cells.

And we have supplements that boost DNA repair in older adults.

The need for false beliefs isn't really necessary when we can make reality what we want: Immortality, Full of potential mates, etc.

Technology is finally getting to that point.

No mass extinction is coming.
Ofc it is lmao.

Climate change
AI
Overpopulation

The list goes on. We’re also overdue a world ending volcanic eruption by like 100000 years or so. JFL at knowing nothing

Fear gets lots of clicks.

But when you investigate the real evidence for any of these narratives, mass extinction is not a likely outcome.

And what is this so called real evidence. There’s literally a 101 ways that human race could end it’s pretty likely

That's my point. There's no evidence for any of these scenarios being likely.

That's like saying there's a 101 ways aliens could pop out of my T.V., so it's pretty likely that aliens are going to come out of my TV. But in reality, all of these scenarios have a near zero chance of happening and collectively they all have a near zero chance of happening.

I'm happy to discuss the scenario you currently believe is most likely to end in human extinction in more detail. It might help for you to think through the reasons for supporting your beliefs

well there’s no way to prove for sure what the chances are of those things happening. Just look at it from this way:

Comet/asteroid hitting earth - very unlikely
AI - quite likely
Nuclear war - somewhat likely
Overpopulation related - very likely
Religious war extinction - likely

So it’s still fairly likely that one of those things out of the 101 will end up wiping us out. Nothing is set in stone so for u to say it’s not gonna happen seems pretty naive to me especially the way things are headed

Since you put Ai as the most likely scenario, why do you believe Ai will wipe out humans, and how do you believe Ai will wipe out humans?

I'm familiar withe works of Eliezer Yudkowsky, Nick-Bostrom, and Richard Hanson around the subject. I use to share the same risk assessment of Ai as you.

I don’t think it’s the most likely I just put that as an example lol. It doesn’t matter which one is the most likely. They all have a similar chance of wiping us all out

If you pick any of these scenarios to discuss, you'll find that when you examine it in detail the chance of it actually happening is near zero.

Our brains consider a scenario more possible when the neural circuitry around that scenario is more engrained. Exposure to those scenario ideas through the media, the news, social media, and fictional entertainment leads to the scenarios becoming very engrained and feeling more likely.

Which is why I believe it's important to talk through the details.

I'd have to know why you think any of these scenarios are likely.

But broadly speaking, human beings don't want to die, and generally don't want to become extinct, so we continually invent better and better safeguards to prevent this extinction.

These safeguards apply to Ai as well, and artificial super intelligence will be directed towards creating these safegaurds.

So for example, say some terrorist group creates a rouge Ai to engineer a Virus. ASI would be able to quarantine the virus before it spreads, and even before that determine what the terrorist group is planning based on the lab equipment they're ordering and their entire life history, and belief systems, which governments and ASI will most likely be aware of.

Ur example doesn’t work because it’s presupposing intention for an AI to have a conscious pathway for human extinction. I’m referring to developmental programming over thousands of years which if not regulated will eventually lead to the AI being able to recognise coding patterns and overcome it on its own. This is highly likely 1. Given the nature of AI and 2. Given the progress rate that it’s developing at

I'm really not presupposing this. Since I didn't have your argument for why you thought Ai extinction was likely, I had to knock down Eliezer Yudkowskies main argument. He's a popular proponent of Ai extinction.

Ai government regulatory bodies are already being set up.

Ai algorithmic regulation already exists and only gets better and better year after year.

As far as millions of years, humans and Ai will co-evolve like dogs and humans. Ai will not want to change it's code in a way that might cause harm to humans.
