Nobody can definitively say since our knowledge of consciousness is extremely limited, but it's misleading to say that it would simply be "darkness".

If you've ever undergone a surgery with general anesthesia, you'll know that it's like a time skip, one second you're on the operating table and the next you're waking up in the ICU as if nothing even happened. The time in between is completely non-existent to you.

If death is indeed the total cessation of consciousness, it's irrelevant to you because you literally cannot experience it by definition. It wouldn't be some eternally dark purgatory.

The eternal or permanent aspect of it is nonsensical too. An eternity of unconsciousness, to the person experiencing it, would pass by in an instant until whatever even makes up a "person" becomes conscious or aware again in some other form.

This is pretty much what I believe happens when you die, at least using the knowledge we have currently. You die, then "wake up" instantly in your newborn body again or as a different person, or even different lifeform in our universe or another one. A lot of that depends on the cosmology of the universe, whether it undergoes heat death or cycles of expansion and contraction, but those are problems meant for people much smarter than me.
