We chose our difficulty settings by choosing what country, family etc we are born into and of course our attractiveness. This is available for humans in the year 2300 when we have genetically engineered ourselves to remove the bad aspects of human nature such as looksim, greed, violence etc and we all live in some type of utopia.
We can still experience what it's like to live life before we entered this golden age through simulations, we do this to get some perspective. Maybe the real you is plugged into a machine in some public building because the machines are too expensive for most people to have in their homes, so you just went there after your 1 hour work day and plugged yourself in for $50. 80 years in this simulation is like 15 minutes in the real world so you won't miss much irl. You chose to live a life as a sub8 man in 2020 just because you've heard stories about how brutal it was back then for that class of people and you wanted to experience hardships.
This would explain why blackpillers can see reality for what it is, maybe some annoying kid accidentally bumped into your machine or the machine malfunctioned so your simulation got disturbed but you are still not fully awake but also not in deep sleep either, this made you aware of the ultimate truth about reality, the blackpill.
