Because of rewards. Looking good means our brain is "satisfied" every time a reflection or picture is seen of us. We feel better mentally since looking good can be a beneficial asset. Looking good means we can get incentives such as better treatment or romantic interest

If you were the only person on mars, looking good would be far less satisfying and beneficial to you. You could be ugly as a bag of rocks and get more pleasure from other traits, such as survival skills.

Even as psychologically advanced as we are (debatable tbh), the human race is still ruled by our biology and we live in a mog or get mogged world. The thing with being better looking than others is that you don't have to say or act out anything. Your mere presence implies superiority over them. An example of this is when you're in the vicinity of another man and he's with his girl. If you clearly mog him from a looks perspective than you could instantly steal the foid away from him in a heartbeat. But you don't do it because it's automatically implied that you could. That right there is one of the most powerful psychosocial dynamics because you live in perpetual dopamine and that man walks away with a shattered ego. He'll never measure up to you, not in a million lifetimes. You're entire life will be like this, simply because you just... exist.
