College for many is just an extension of high school and doesn't prepare you for the working world, which is unrelenting and brutal. If you know exactly what you want to do and have done your homework and are planning on going into an in-demand field then there's the chance that it isn't a waste of time, but you would have to be extremely mentally disciplined/mature and able to separate your studies from your social problems.

If you go into it expecting to be some kind of socialite and slayer then you are probably bound for disappointment. Personally, my experiences in college crippled me and I would have been way better off if I'd just been working the same job since I was 18.
