Back when Romania was communist they copied many things from North Korea, it was like a lighter version of their type of communism and most people were married, family values were encouraged, promiscuity and slutting around strongly discouraged, there were many laws and measures to ensure this:
- abortions were banned, there were no contraceptives, condoms, sex education, etc., if you didn't have kids after the age of 25 you paid a tax(10% of your salary), marrying brought many benefits: you could get a bigger apartment, higher salary, better job opportunities, you were allowed to buy a car, color TV, travel outside, etc. Pretty much everyone married then, it was much easier to live as a married couple than alone.

Back in communist Romania the law didn't recognize date rape or spousal rape(these were recently introduced now, along with other feminist laws forced on us by the European Union), no family violence laws, no divorces allowed for bullshit reasons(physical violence was only admissible if the woman needed medical treatment for this, slapping and light beatings were basically allowed, beating your wife was pretty much a national tradition mentioned in many stories, tales, jokes, etc.), men had much more power over women then.
