In World War I, white feathers were symbols of cowardice handed to men not in military uniform. Initiated by Admiral Charles Penrose-Fitzgerald in Britain in 1914, the White Feather Campaign encouraged women to shame able-bodied men into enlisting
Groups of young women would approach healthy-looking men in civilian clothes, berate them, and hand them a white feather in public to mark them as cowards
