Sure. They could still hang onto the rule if they chose to, but considering these countries were democratic, the people just didn't want it anymore. In South Africa and Rhodesia they had faith that not much would change, so why not give blacks some power to end the international pressure. Portugal gave up Angola and Mozambique because the people got tired of the endless wars and literally just chose to leave overnight thinking it was no longer worth it to hang onto the colonies, since China, USSR and USA all funded the rebels with good weaponry.
I'm guessing it was much of the same story for the brits and french. USA wanted the colonies for themselves to exploit as capitalist cash cows and Soviets wanted them to turn communist, so it wasn't just a popular choice to hold onto them anymore considering what it took to fight these people who had endless supply of AKs and men to use them.
