Tell me who it is and give a short description of why that actor in particular stands out to you in terms of his or her abilities.

@slayer69 is an expert so obligatory tag.

Trying to see what quirks or skills you find valuable in an actor you watch.

probably malcolm mcdowell, he played so well in a clockwork orange to the point where I had to view other movies he played in rght after. He puts so much effort into fitting in the complexity that the character he's playing holds .

Both of these guys are very good.
Most touching respective performance by each is imo:
Will Smith - The Pursuit of Happyness
Shia LaBeouf - The Peanut Butter Falcon

Very serious method actor that always makes sure to truly go the extra mile for his performances even if sacrificing not only his mind but also looks and comfort.

Christoph Waltz, liked him in Django Unchained and Inglorious Basterds, Samuel L. Jackson, Will Smith and Brad Pitt up there too.

All the actors mentioned on this thread are/ were mainstream tbh
From the less known ones I`d say John Cazale, Omar Epps, Matt Smith and Noho Hank from Barry

damon, dicaprio, bale. the holy trinity of the new generation

wahlberg doesn't have the range, d. day-lewis doesn't take up enough roles

honorable mention: taylor lautner

Quantity doesn't matter over quality and DDL has turned out at least 8-10 performances better than the best of Damon, Leo and Bale's. Damon is a weird choice, though. He isn't even better than someone like Pitt

agree about lewis (he could make a movie about painting walls an oscar candidate), but completely disagree about damon. come on. pitt is a great actor, but he is 85% looks.

Nope, on the contrary actually his acting abilities are under appreciated because he considered a "prettyboy", watch The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Nah man Pitt can act. Fight Club, Jesse James, 12 Monkeys, Snatch, Burn After Reading, Tree of Life, Ad Astra and more. Pitt is hindered by his looks (when it comes to perceived acting ability) because it leads people to believe he's just a pretty face. If someone uglier gave the performances he's given they'd be seen much more prestigiously

fair enough, i dont really think pitt's career is all about looks. but you can't deny damon's versatility.

ok, i was too harsh with that 85% looks bit, i agree with this. seen the movies you listed and he excelled in all of them.

loved the jesse james movie with affleck's brother.

Anya was super good in Split along with Mcavoy.

haven't seen that one, but she is just insanely charismatic. tired of actresses who just stand there being pretty.

For the purpose of encouraging discussion,
1, I'm only including Actors who predominantly work in the Hollywood/American Film Industry
and
2, Have majority of their prominent filmography post 1980

That being said, The best Actors are:
Leonardo DiCaprio
Clint Eastwood
Antony Hopkins
Kevin Spacey
Guy Pearce
Robert De Niro
Jeremy Irons
Jeremy Strong
Edward Norton
Ben Affleck
Christian Bale (truly dishonorable that he barely gets roles that match his insane potential and is stuck with nolan tier cringe roles)
Steve Carell
Matt Damon
Mel Gibson
Willem Dafoe
