They can only do it to people who know nothing about cars.

This is the same problem with modern day programming. 20 years ago, it seems like they had the same gate keeping culture in programming. Nowadays the software developer demographics changed and all the knowledge is available for free on the internet. What is the result? A lot more competition and oversaturation.
