Why do girls say I'm attractive behind my back, but rarely approach or interact with me IRL?

I've only received such information from a second-hand source. For example, at a summer camp I went to, I had a friend who'd just tell "another girl called you hot." On another occasion, one of my close friends said that some of his GFs said to his face that they once had a crush on me (which is brutal both on his end and mine, he's also a 6'0 Germanic HTN+ btw).

The thing is, why wouldn't they tell me upfront? Is it an intimidation thing? Or am I just not attractive/good-looking enough to pass the threshold of the female approaching?

Idk maybe you always look angry, try to give a more inviting vibe. Smile, say hi and see how she reacts. Works in everyday life, clubs and so on, especially if your are very gl, she might be intimidated.
