Why do most people descend while being in a relationship and ascend again after?

Just saw my ex again after almost 2 years and she looks great, way better than she did with me. I’ve also improved a lot after the breakup so I’m wondering why people look like shit while being in relationships.
Has anyone else experienced this or is it just me?
