Lots of things contribute, but big factors are social norms/pressure and the psychological need to feel desired.

In the West, the idea that you have to get married is dying down. But it's still a common idea that that's the pathway to a successful and prosperous life. So many people feel pressured and might get with someone who they tolerate and like. But they don't necessarily love them truthfully. It's just what they thought they had to do. And what people told them to do.

Also, most humans feel a need for connection. Many people will grasp at straws in failing relationships. Because they don't want to be alone.

And yeah, money and vanity and other shit all play a role.
