The plantation slavery model started becoming inefficient with technological advancement. In the North, due to a more industrialized economy, low-wage labor was more viable than slavery.

Exactly the south was also extremely racist but I like to believe if most of the slaves were in the north instead of the south black culture would be extremely different. Southern influence with a mix of systemic racism and having no education pretty much created the blacks we see today.
