Well, people generally don't try if they truly believe their life is already over. The problem is that most people aren't self-aware enough to know whether that is actually true. And even if someone believes their life is "over," what does that mean in this context? Success is not binary, it's a spectrum. You can always improve your life to some extent.

The same goes for looks, but in terms of dating there may be some threshold you need to cross. However, I do think that very few people are physically limited below the required looks in order to be somewhat successful in the dating scene. Some may need significant surgical intervention, but if someone is aware of their options, they're still not pursuing a dead end. If they don't know that hardmaxxing is necessary, it may be over, but they haven't actually reached the conclusion so trying still appears to be worthwhile
