Yes, purchasing power is particularly bad right now but might get better if inflation relaxes. We are going through a tough and acute macro-economic period that will hopefully be resolved over the next 1-3 years and bring down the day-to-day cost of living.

And I also agree that it is significantly more difficult to buy a house than it was 30+ years ago. I put it down to globalization in part. You have rich foreigners buying up real estate as investment assets in attractive first world countries driving up the cost of housing for locals. Some of these building are empty. But hey this is the same globalization that gives you an iPhone and Laptop at a fraction of the cost of what it would be without globalization. Population growth and urbanization too (and a few other factors) have caused this rise in housing prices.

However, real wages (adjusted for inflation) have increased since the 80s and your quality of life today is exponentially better now than it was then (in part due to technological innovation driving the cost of many things down) Our generation complains while they have laptops, iphones, access to netflix, uber, deliveroo, cheap travel, 5G, better healthcare, social media... Give me a break. So fucking entitled.

And I don't see how it's unfair that you would have to work and save money in order to buy a house. That's life. You want a nice big house to live in you have to earn it. Again, people think they are just owed these things. You are not. To build a house you need an architect, raw materials, workers, a plumber, electricians, carpenters working their ass off. It's hard work. You need to earn it.

I do agree wages in the UK are shit. But in order to earn a 100k wage you need to get work experience and build your skill-set. That's how careers work. You can't just get it out of the gate as an entry level salary.
