Mewing alone after certain age is not enough to cause significant changes, but maybe it prevents worsening. For actually recessed people, surgical intervention is preferable and relying on mewing to fix themselves would be a false hope and a waste of time, which could instead be spent on actual procedures/surgeries and recovery after them.
