recessed maxilla:
  • nose looks bigger or bumpier
  • flat or recessed cheekbones
  • hollow under eyes infraorbitals weak
  • longer midface look
  • less forward facial projection
  • nasolabial folds deeper
  • thinner looking upper lip support
  • philtrum looks longer
  • mouth sits slightly back

jaw / bite
  • overbite or class ii bite common
  • lower jaw looks recessed even if it normal
  • chin can look weak
  • teeth crowding or narrow palate
airway / breathing
  • smaller nasal airway
  • mouth breathing more likely
  • higher chance of snoring or sleep apnea
eye area
  • less lower eyelid support
  • tired hollow eye look
side profile
  • convex profile nose sticks out more compared to face
  • weak midface slope
Guide to “fixing” it:

mild cases
  • orthodontics sometimes
  • palate expanders if the maxilla narrow
  • braces to fix bite
  • fillers for cheeks or under eyes just cosmetic
actual skeletal recession

only real fix is orthognathic surgery
main one
  • le fort i osteotomy → surgeons cut the maxilla move it forward and fix with plates
sometimes combined with
  • palatal expansion surgery if upper jaw too narrow
  • double jaw surgery if lower jaw also off
growing kids / teens use
  • facemask protraction
  • rapid palatal expander
once growth done
bone position basically only changed with surgery
fix your midface otherwise it’s OVER

what if my maxilla is developed horizontally but underdeveloped vertically and only slightly forwardly.

For instance when I talk my teeth don't show, I have the typical short face syndrome. it looks normal when I jutt my jaw but still

I'm 16.
