I think it either comes from insecurity on their part, or you give off a beta vibe. I mostly get "bud" and being 6'2, I'm usually a head taller than the people I get this from. I do kind of feel like I give off a beta vibe through my behavior and being raised by a single mother probably contributed to that.
I usually just treat the remarks as a friendly greeting and pay them no mind. Not sure how to fix the beta tendencies if that is the case though :\
