Everything about them feels… insincere… from a social standpoint.
They're best understood not as a lookist/BP phenomenon and more like a very crude example of organism interdependence in biology (think of the type of content you can see on BBC Earth).
A good analogy would also be the invasive species like Asian carps out-competing and consuming everything in their way (which also presents an interesting parallel due to their geographic origin, subsequent invasion of North America).
Yes, it’s the new equilibrium. It’s “better”, for the lack of a better term, but there still remains that itch that should tell you that something is off.
