What are concrete reasons why women keep lying about the significance of appearance for sexual attraction and long-term relationships?

I can't understand what women would lose by just telling the truth. Men would no longer be misled by their lies and more men would start to work on themselves, something that women also want, good looking men. For e.g. "Thank you for talking to me. But you are not my type. The reason is only your looks. By that I mean I find your face unattractive, but you can work on it.". Such a respectful reply would be totally okay. And they wouldn't lose anything. It is completely okay if they don't feel any attraction. I just don't understand why they decide to gaslight us, instead of telling the truth.

The behavior is overdetermined; even if they weren't trying to avoid getting smacked up, there's a billion other reasons why it's a good idea not to let randos know that they're ugly to their face. So, the women are all responding with the same gaslights, but for usually different reasons. Ultimately, all of those reasons make their choice of response more advantageous to them than any alternative.
