Some years ago I was given this small task to make a ELD(Electronic Logging Device system for drivers). My boss gave me all the compliance paper work, but only mentioned to make sure that I meet and assume these three things Property carrying drivers, 70hrs/8days, no adverse driving conditions and Fueling at least once every 1,000 miles and 1 hour for pickup and drop off those were the only constraints he gave me he didnt mention anything else but gave me the documents to study anyway

And I found a mountain of edge cases. Short haul exceptions, state specific highway limits etc etc.

1777311831040

Even the damn log book wasnt standardized it was just the grid inside. I found multiple different variations for the same thing

And to make things worse I wasn't a US citizen so every time I tried to acces to Department of Transportation (DOT) documents I would get the dreaded 403 Forbidden, try clicking on this link if you are not from the US you'll get a 403

I was overwhelmed by all this and Instead of clarifying the scope, my intern ego took over. Hell no I am not asking no one, I'm here to prove my worth, im not playing around I not like those other interns i will prove that I am elite by covering every single rabbit hole I found. I was only given a week and told to spend not more 20 something work hours on the task but did I listen no. It was a ego think now

I spent multiple hours churning out 2,000 lines of code building a repo that handled every obscure edge case. Just put the pickup, drop, fill in the details and it gives you all the ready made day wise logs, the fuel stop, the rest stops all of which comply with the 14 hour rules and every legal limit and every edge case. I submitted it with immense pride, expecting a standing ovation for my thoroughness.

Instead my boss called me into his office and scolded me. He told me he needed a simple internal tool for planning purposes. I never told you to build a full-scale ELD logging suite. By over delivering you have created a Frankenstein that is a nightmare to maintain, a single law changes in any state and this entire breaks. He ordered me to comment out everything and keep only the three constraints he initially requested. He also joked to me saying. Jason, you really think dem' country folk gonna spend time filling out all this. Who were you even building this for son? This looks more like tax returns form, please don't focus on better things to do. You already stressed me out on a Monday morning.

Correct. Only do as you are told to do and nothing else is the best policy.

Something similar happened to me too. That feeling when you go out of your way to spend extra time, hoping that your hard work will be recognized and praised, but in the end, they just make you look like an idiot. Shit like this is so fucking demotivating.

I think one of the laws in the 48 laws of power is "never outshine the master." Trying too hard to impress your superior will most likely backfire

If you are trying to get a promotion you should take up work, more tasks etc but still stay within the scope and limits that is the best policy if you are in some big company. In startup and open offices it's sometimes okay to go beyond the scope but you need to inform before hand

I was actually thinking about being a truck driver as like a backup if nothing worked out for me

I guess I should find something else perhaps

You better take credit from contemporaries and give it to those above you if you want to advance in the corporate world.

That doesnโ€™t sound bad to me
Get Grade A Commercial Driver's License. You can then carry high value vehicles and they either outright own/lease a truck or start hauling tankers and hazmats. 100-300k easy

100k-300k a year is insane to me

Iโ€™ll have to consider it

ay didn't i tell you about this theres a certain amount of work/compensation where owning a business is genuinely a better effort and enjoyable then accepting a role at some quant or faang knowing your workplace is gonna be toxic, got ptsd from it

i knew a dude who became a swe at jump trading makin 250k raw but wasn't a quant and he still had to work like 80 hours a week is it really worth it over 120k for 10-20 hours a week :feelshah:

Yeah once you own the vehicle the margins are insane but there's also risks involved it's a high risk high reward thing. Initially you should probably start with clearing the grade a and then try to find work on a salary and then once you build the reputation and the network move on from there.

Truck drivers can earn a lot of money too btw. But you need years of experience, a spotless track record and be in some niche specialized thing. Like if you are just a normal truck driver you ain't getting paid much. Now you start driving tankers, hazmats then you start making good money. I'd imagine it's the same for other tradie jobs too
