So, I saw this map today. Odds of being born in each continent. Some Redditors in the comment section wanted to make some Chinese guy calling himself an NPC feel better, so of course:

"Being born is the ultimate lottery!""The chances of being born right now are infinitesimally small!""Life is a miracle!"

To illustrate: You're driving and see a car with plate 42-NJ-PK. You think, "My God! What are the odds of seeing THIS EXACT PLATE at THIS EXACT MOMENT? It's a MIRACLE!"

...

See how fucking stupid that sounds? Some plate had to be there. The fact that it was 42-NJ-PK instead of 92-TL-QR means nothing. You're marveling at an outcome after it happened.

This is what people do with existence. They calculate the odds of this specific sperm meeting this specific egg and call it a miracle. But there was no "you" waiting in line hoping to get born. If a different sperm won, you wouldn't exist to care. And whoever did exist would be having this same stupid thought.

Everything is "Impossible"

Sure, the odds of you existing are astronomically small. So what? The odds are just as small for:
  • Your specific coffee stain on your desk
  • That particular cloud formation you saw yesterday
  • The exact sequence of words in the last text message you sent
Trace back the causal chain of anything and the probability becomes "infinitesimal." Every single event is the endpoint of an unimaginably complex process.

So either everything is a miracle, or nothing is. Pick one.

RANT OVER.

Crazy how less people live in Russia than the US yet it's landmass is nearly 2x as large. That must mean we need to import more 3rd worlders.

That's not how probability works JFL. Winning the lottery isn't 50/50 just because you either win or you don't.

The odds on an absolute level are infinitesimally small, but that applies to literally everything surrounding us. The specific arrangement of trash in a dumpster also had to go a very particular way to end up exactly like that.

It’s factually true, but inspirationally bankrupt. It doesn't mean anything.

People use this same low-IQ argument to say the universe is special and God designed it ("If the physical constants were just... a little off!"). Yeah, and if they were off, we wouldn't be here to observe it. Survivorship bias.

the 50/50 thing is a meme pretty sure.. i doubt anyone actually thinks like that, and if they do it's just delusion :feelswhat:

I see it all the time in roguelike game communities (like binding of isaac) - when someone asks "HOW RARE IS THIS HOLY MOLY" people just meme saying it's a 50/50 even when it's a 0.000001% rarest event in the game.

I'll be devil's advocate here, forgive me.

How can you rationally conclude that "experiencing life" is better than "nothing" when you have no frame of reference for the latter?

The "us" that exists has never experienced non-existence. The closest biological function we have to non-existence is dreamless sleep; and people love sleeping. It's the only time you're free from suffering. You can't miss the party if you never existed to receive the invite. People just try to make biology sound deep to justify their own survival instinct.

People romanticize existence because they are terrified of the alternative: that we are lost in a big, dark, mysterious universe with absolutely no purpose.

Think about it. That reality is infinitely more terrifying than any hell religion can conjure up because it leaves the door open to the unknown. And if there's anything humans are more scared of than what will happen, it's what could happen.

No, I couldn't have.

If I were born in a warzone in Africa, I would have different DNA, different parents, and a different consciousness. I wouldn't be "me."

Saying "You could have been X" implies there is a soul floating around in the ether waiting to be assigned a character slot. That's religious cope. I am a product of this specific environment; I couldn't be anything else.

People who feel depressed and hate life while being born in places people would cut their arm off to enter are morons.

"Lucky" implies I drew a card from a deck of 7 billion possible spawn points. I didn't. I came out of my specific parents in their specific house.

You're conflating "lucky" (probability) with "fortunate" (quality of life).

And gatekeeping depression based on geography is low IQ. A guy in a penthouse can still blow his brains out if his brain is broken. Location doesn't cure the human condition.

And gatekeeping depression based on geography is low IQ. A guy in a penthouse can still blow his brains out if his brain is broken. Location doesn't cure the human condition.

True but that’s their fault. If you have money you can see a therapist for emotional needs or high-end escort for you physical needs, you can artificially cure loneliness with money.

i think youre right for all the wrong reasons. the chance of YOU, same traits and such, or the genetic YOU being born are very, very, small. But the chance of a child being born at all from the combination of sperm and egg is incredibly high.

so taking your liscense plate example, you are bound to find a liscense plate, on a car, while driving, but the chance to find YOUR liscense plate on say, a florida or delaware car, is probably incredibly rare.

You are missing the point entirely.

If I shuffle a deck of cards, the probability of that specific order is 1 in 8x10^67. It is practically impossible. Yet, there it is on the table.

Every single sperm/egg combo has "very, very small" odds. Rarity is not special when EVERY outcome is equally rare. You are still painting the bullseye around the arrow after it landed.

To your analogy:

If I see a Florida plate in Delaware, yes, it's rare. But some car had to be in that spot at that moment. If it wasn't the Florida car, it would have been a Texas car, or a Maine car.

The fact that it was the Florida car (or "Me") is only significant because we are here to observe it. If a different sperm won, a different person would be sitting here typing this, thinking they were the special rare outcome. Survivorship bias.

I’ve said it before and I will certainly say it again:

The odds mean NOTHING

The QOL is everything

Your whole worldview is based on basic-nihilism then, even though I kinda agree with you: existence itself is nothing special.

But the fact that out of all those absurdly huge probabilities your "number" got pulled still makes your existence something special to you.
And that’s exactly why you should base your sense of self-awareness of your own existence on how insanely lucky you actually are. You ended up in a spot literally anyone else could’ve been in.

Everything else exists within you, as your own existence is the key entrance to enter the existential realm in the first place, where gandy already awaits you to mog your whole bloodline for all eternity.
