Main reason is the fact women aren't objects no more. I think woman's natural inclination is to have 2-3 kids while in patriarchal societies, they're basically raped by their husband and end up with 5-6 kids. That's the birth rate in America prior to sexual revolution in 60s.

What drags birth rates down below replacement rate is capitalist exploitation in the housing market and wages. you said yourself that cost of having a kid is a big one.

We should strengthen worker rights, get our buying power back. I'd rather go further and democratize the workplace and decomodify housing
