Would dressing better improve my first impression?

I've heard that the way you dress can affect people's first impression of you. Personally, I don't really have a style. usually just throw on the first thing I find in my closet, which is often baggy clothes with Tapout prints. I kind of look like a junkie sometimes.
I've been thinking about starting to wear dress shirts and suit pants instead. Is that too much for a 17yearold? What do you guys think?
