I recently had an ortho scam me with poorly planned orthodontics which caused my occlusal plane angle to change immediately and caused mandible rotation.
Basically a 2mm gap between my wisdom teeth immediately closed as my wisdom teeth gained contact that would be physically impossible from tooth movement alone with just 2 aligners
This slight change in mandible angle had catastrophic effects on my mandible appearance and facial appearance as a whole but thankfully I found a device to undo the damage and signal to my jaw muscles to pull my mandible back to it's previously established position
With the orthodontics, my lower third suddenly looked more narrow and fragile and more downward grown, it completely reduced the overall facial robustness appearance just from mandible looking less square
My ramus looked shorter, my gonians looked more inwards, my chin looked too long
This got me thinking about just how much damage traditional orthodontics during teen years can do to someone's mandible position and face as a whole
They are literally dragging your mandible into an unnatural position and giving zero consideration for the aesthetic implications
Even this slight change in mandible angle completely changed how the shadow is cast on my jawline and the difference in squareness when looking from 3/4 view is dramatic
The non downward grown position is blatantly more aesthetic looking in terms of shadow casting
I had a surgeon basically deliver an ideal outcome a couple of years ago and a scamming ortho who told me i needed to fix a dental issue almost scammed me out of my jaw surgery result
I'm not sure how much of a benefit jaw implants can produce in terms of attaining peak aesthetic halo but simply getting your mandible into a natural position if you have a malocclusion can have extreme aesthetic benefits
I've known for some time that actually having mandible setback or shaving off some mandible mass (so long as it reduces downwards growth and helps with angle aesthetics) is more beneficial than having a large mass downward grown mandible but I didn't realize the full extent to which the mandible influences the aesthetics of the entire face even due to a minor rotation
Mandible is giga important
