It’s virtually impossible for most people to continue living in the absence of such a cope. If you could show someone their definitive future, tell them that their life was going to end up the same way it always had, that they’ll never be special, never have that girl, never be rich, etc, most people would probably kill themselves right then and there.
Yet as long as it isn’t made explicitly clear, as long as there’s the slightest ambiguity, people will cling to it until their dying breath.
