Everyone talks about caffeine, nicotine and pre-workouts.

Almost nobody talks about Kola nuts, even though they've been used across West Africa for centuries to fight fatigue, suppress hunger and stay mentally sharp. The original Coca-Cola even got its name from the kola nut.

The interesting part isn't just the caffeine.

Unlike coffee, whole kola nuts naturally contain:

  • 2–3.5% caffeine
  • 0.05–1% theobromine
  • Polyphenols (catechins & epicatechins)
Most people know caffeine, but almost nobody knows theobromine.

Theobromine is in the same chemical family as caffeine (methylxanthines), but it's a much milder stimulant. It lasts longer in the body, has mild bronchodilating and vasodilating effects, and many people describe the combination of caffeine + theobromine as feeling smoother than coffee.

Traditionally, people don't brew kola nuts like coffee. They're usually chewed raw or dried, often over a longer period rather than consumed all at once, which naturally spreads out the stimulant intake.

Why I Think They're Worth Looking Into

  • Cheap and natural source of caffeine.
  • Short-term appetite suppression while cutting.
  • Proven caffeine benefits for gym performance and focus.
  • Theobromine may make the stimulation feel less harsh than coffee for some people.
  • A long history of traditional use instead of being another "TikTok supplement."

Dosage

  • 1–2 g = Light stimulation
  • 3–5 g = Sweet spot
  • 5–8 g = Strong (if you're already used to caffeine)
Chew the dried nut slowly, or grind it into a powder and mix it into water, tea, or smoothies if you don't like the bitter taste.

Coffee vs. Kola Nuts

A typical dried kola nut weighs around 5–15 g.

1 cup of coffee (240 mL): ~80–100 mg caffeine

1 average dried kola nut (5–15 g): ~150–300 mg caffeine + ~20–60 mg theobromine

So, one average dried kola nut can provide roughly 1.5–3× the caffeine of a cup of coffee, plus theobromine, a milder, longer-lasting stimulant that many people find gives a smoother overall effect.:bigbrain::bigbrain::bigbrain::bigbrain:

I never tried Matcha thats that green stuff right

Edit: Found a few more interesting things.

  • Caffeine peaks after about 30–60 minutes, but theobromine peaks around 2–3 hours and stays in your system longer. That could explain why a lot of people describe kola nuts as having a smoother, longer-lasting effect.
  • Kola nuts also contain catechins, epicatechins and procyanidins—the same type of polyphenols found in cocoa and green tea.
  • Traditionally they're chewed slowly, not brewed. The slow chewing may release the caffeine more gradually than drinking a cup of coffee quickly.
  • They're bitter as hell, but you also avoid the sugar and additives that come with most energy drinks.
The more I read about them, the more surprising it is that almost nobody in the biohacking or looksmax community talks about them.
