I think of it as like a crust that I didn’t even recognize until my 20s and had to do some pretty drastic things to reveal and chip away at.

You don't just inherit genetics, you inherit mental things from your parents... think of this as "mental genetics".
A lot of your behavior could be influenced from traits developed in your parents' childhood and passed down to you.
If your dad developed a passion for math, you're going to be born with a proclivity to be better at processing numbers.

If your dad had abused dog psychology and never fixed it, those mental tendencies could be passed on you and since mind controls biology, it could downregulate dopamine and testosterone. Of course, these things could be changed but you have to do this mentally.

It's all unconscious, so you may not even notice these tendencies, it may all seem "natural" to you.
