ive changed my mind, now that I have a better understanding of how ai actually works i no longer believe it's a scam. the fundamental idea is very basic and intuitive: create a function with literal billions of incterconnected parameters (mimicking strucutre of human brain) and then feed it all the data (pairs of inputs and outputs) you can get your hands on in order to estimate these parameters. the function should then converge to the functioning of a human brain (for a particular task). it's legit just like OLS but on a ridiculous order of magnitude.
it's also important to understand the limits of AI. because neural nets are attempting to replicate the functioning of the human brain, they will be very good at typical human tasks (image recognition, chatbots, creating art etc) but they cannot go beyond the simple proccesses of our brain. they will not advance our scientific or technological understanding of the universe. they will still revolutionize our world by creating insane efficinecy gains from getting computers to do many typical human tasks and improve our QoL, but nothing like a technological singularity will happen
