Chinese courts rule that layoffs due to AI are illegal

Contrary to America's strategy of just fucking their citizens at every possible opportunity and giving no concern for the consequences it seems like China is going with opposite strategy of just not completely fucking their citizens at every opportunity and being somewhat concerned with the consequences

Very interesting and unconventional strategy I will say but we will see how things play out 🤔

That reminds me of Milton Friedman seing chinese workers digging a canal with shovels instead of machines. He was told they did so because it created more jobs. He then answered :"Then why not give them spoons instead of shovels".
Chinese were actually proven wrong as there was no need to do any keynesian type of decisions like this at the time, so idk what to think about this, obviously the context here is very different and it might actually be smarter to apply this strat now

They seem to be looking a lot into large scale use of AI tho, as they explained it in their latest 5-year plan, but I'd guess they would rather use it for the planification of the economy rather than using it to replace low skill workers like in the West.

I wont be surprised if america follows tho, mass unemployment/undermeployment never looks good for any government, and we did try a tax refund

it will be easier to re-qualify workers in a fully centralized system like China

It's easier to do a lot in China

But also then that's because it's overtly authoritarian

I guess that's the trade off

Its seems the American government has something else completely in mind for its population and reducing occupational insecurity and overall anxiety towards the future actually seem antithetical to whatever that is

They are definitely into using AI to increase productivity and efficiency, idk if they are so much into a small bunch of psychopathic tech overlords increasing productivity and efficiency by oppressing the masses approach the US seems to be taking

Yes obviously the major flaw with this is that it might be less efficient than simply allowing technology to ruthlessly outpace the value of human labor but then that's always balanced against the fact that doing that causes widespread dissatisfaction and resentment which can cause many other problems

In this case I think this law is actually quite intelligent because it doesn't prevent the integration of the new technology but does create some constraints which force companies to integrate it in ways which are truly necessary instead of using it as an excuse to suck more profits out of the system at the expense of the stability of the system (companies AI washing to cover poor hiring practices as is seen in America)

Not sure why you think this is a W.

The Chinese economy is not a closed system. By restricting AI usage, the Chinese government is restricting the competitiveness of its own companies internationally. Which is a horrible idea for a country that depends on exporting cheap goods to afford to import food, oil, etc.

cause every other country will implode if they layoff everyone due to AI in the long run. short term its not ideal but later they will be laughing

You cannot possibly think that being able to utilize a tool that can make business processes faster, cheaper, and more efficient is not a competitive advantage.

They will just give UBI to the unemployed

The eventual result will be unemployment in china due to lack of international demand while western countries are able to cover the unemployment with the increased tax revenue from ai profitability

the only company i see do that to a grand scale was oracle in march despite getting government funding, and its hard to compare american employment vs chinese employment

china struggles with innovation due to government control too

america service
china manufacturing

note americans don't know what they want about this so the government has to go against the people in a time where they're already wildly unpopular

No all major tech companies have been doing it Facebook, Amazon, Google, all of them idk why you think only Oracle is laying people off

Not to mention the tons of smaller tech companies and general companies that are exploiting H1B loopholes for cheaper and more dependent labor

Americans are quite clear about what they want, again not sure where you have this idea that Americans are confused about where they stand on immigration. Maybe you are factoring in far leftist types? Well these people I don't consider American because they have no real belief system and actively wish for the destruction of the country they benefit from.

Trump is the current president and he ran specifically on an America First platform and won the popular vote so the majority of Americans are very clearly anti immigration and nationalistic at this time. The problem is Trump immediately betrayed his voter base and revealed himself to be part of the establishment elite who wish to disenfranchise average Americans more than they currently are and has taken no real steps to stop this disenfranchisement in any significant way instead opting to start an unnecessary war and sell off the country to Israel

Didn't matter who got the vote it was probably going to israel regardless, I don't understand anything before 2026 can still be attributed to covid only outlier would be meta but I don't think this is ai related they're just extremly unstable, H1B is already problem trump is tackling im sure you know about that, yes i am factoring in far left politics if they were some kind of minority i would agree with you but unfortuantely just look at the no kings protest and media presence around fuck ice this is ain't like some niche nazi far right rhetoric

and i feel like china just has so much more authoritative power compared to america, so i think its more of the companies fault to control hiring but ai replacement happening in america is so much different due to funding differences and actual frontier work. China is still needing to distill ai

Yes but there isn't really any action taken to stop these things is my point. A country that is completely controlled by a hostile foreigner power and an elite cabal of technocratic oligarchs has no real interest in increasing the leverage of the working class. I get that Trump or whoever may appear to be taking some action somewhere to stop this stuff but I just don't buy it when he himself is part of the opposition.

He got voted in by pulling off the greatest con in history is he suddenly going to turn around and go "Actually guys let's help the American worker like I said we would." No, he's not. He never had any intention to, he just pretended he would, that's how a con works, we all got swindled. He clearly has much bigger priorities and helping the American middle and lower class is not one of them. He may do this and that here and there but his actions show he would much rather wage a war against Iran than wage a war against financial inequality in this country. It is what it is.

Again, I don't buy into American AI one bit. I think it's all one big scam. This narrative that this is some massively revolutionary technology that will fundamental change the labor dynamics for either country is horseshit. It will increase productivity to some extent by consolidating information but it will not revolutionize anything, and im this way I don't see China's relative position to be all that detrimental. Imo China, taking the more measured and methodical approach is actually far more in line with the realities of the technology, leading to more sensible and rational integration long term, unlike in the US where the hype as far outpaces the utility and the implementation far more sloppy and irrational.

And yes I agree that leftists are a significant portion of the population but they are an extension of oligarch globalist class, they get all their beliefs and narratives from this class. They aren't so much a competing voting block fighting against the dominant powers as much as they are it's foot soldiers. In this way it is still a fight against two competing powers rather than the three competing powers as it appears.

I mean I agree but no one has been happy for a president since clinton, and i have alot of family members in china/taiwan/singapore that aren't happy about china so you and most chinese are in the same predicaments about their own country im not gonna defend either but the argument that one is doing better than the other for the workforce is questionable imo. Most people aren't software engineers most ai tools are geared towards software engineers theres like a bunch of spinoffs of harnesses and orchestrating tools like kiro, claude code, codex, open claw, clawcode. People want open source ai but when something like anthropics gets its shit leaked they throw fits and theres now like 10 reverse engineered projects that people use instead of claude code based off that leak. Nowadays no one is writing code and most of your output is based on how much money you have to spend on like multiple accounts for orchestration purposes which can cost up to like $5k a month per engineer

Yeah I by no means am suggesting that China is perfect or will ultimately be able to sustain itself longer than the US but I do think they do some things that are just much more rationally and efficiently, however like I've already admitted, this ability relies on authoritarian control, which can cause its own problems.

I'm moreso showcasing the contrast in how the two countries are handling this development. America just says fuck you to its workers, zero protections zero concerns, while China at least is trying to mitigate the worst outcomes.

Similar to what they did with banning certain types of soap operas that encourage female hypergamy.

Like you say, most of the value of AI is for a small subsect of either economy. Now will that have disproportionate impact? Maybe but I'm taking the conservative view that it won't for most people and that there are much more important things going on right now that require attention as it pertains to the stability of either country and in this sense I think China is making the better decision.

I agree, the relative instability of America allows for many people to be influenced in many nefarious ways but also it allows the possibility that they can be changed or influenced in other ways by anyone else, it's a free for all

But also this can end up consolidating in a authoritarian power all the same

I mean there are whole communities built around accelerationism in the sense of ai, but like I said an authoritarian government can get things moving extremely fast because it doesn't need to be passed through different layers of goverrnment and with the pace of ai it just blew past and is dominating math, research, and everything relating to swe.

dario, elon, and sam all propose similar solutions like do you agree with them?

No I don't agree with them I think they are scammers or probably worse

A lot the US economy is fake jobs that don't need to exist and probably should be automated so in that sense it may disrupt things but that's not really "disrupting" anything moreso exposing the farce for what it is

This "solution" is solving a problem that shouldn't exist in the first place, AI will do nothing to address fundamental problem which is a hollow society which built an economy built on scams, lying and sophisticated vampiric extraction of its citizens

There's zero way LLM's are dominating any real research in anything meaningful other than maybe increasing the pace that some research can be done by quicker consolidation of disparate information. LLM's are incapable of true reasoning but they are very good at synthesizing big data which is useful to some extent. For example I think Palantir is actually an incredible company that is using AI in one of the only real ways it can be used right now, and that's in the way I just stated.

And if anything AI will make all of this worse because if there's one thing it's good at is rapid learning based on patterns and sophisticated extraction in our economy comes almost entirely down to mapping behavioral patterns, something AI/machine learning will be able to do with much more granularity and accuracy than anything we've seen before

to summarize what you said, "research was accelerated" = nothing meaningful, what do you think is revolutionary if something even before modern chatbots like alphafold, chip designs weren't revolutionary, and current models finding the keys to unsolved math equations that would've gone unsolved for years

very few people see ai in its current state as agi, no one knows what that will ever look like and note that chatgpt 4 the first actually usable model was released march 14, 2023.

as for the reasoning, people use claude despite it being the dumbest big model for its usability i tihnk thats all the people care about, so thats where the companies entire focus will shift becausse thats where consumers see the most value.

palantir is a bit archaic so using it as like modern ai isn't useful i feel like this level of surveillence was just prevented by government

I think technology has been improving as it has the whole time

The hype began specifically with ChatGPT dropping

That's what I'm saying is a farce, the massively inflated valuations, the trillion dollar promises of a entire new economic landscape where technology is entirely different than what it is now, robots taking all the jobs, that's what I'm saying is fake, not that alphafold is fake, obviously that stuff is real and valuable, but they were doing that stuff the whole time

I'm talking about the hype, which is distinct and new and began with the release of ChatGPT specifically. That's clearly all marketing so a few people can get really, really rich. That's where all the fear mongering and talk about "revolutionary technology" is coming from.

No one is talking about alphafold and the like, at least that occupies a very small part of the conversation even though it's actually the thing that may move the needle.

You need to seperate these two because lumping in Claude with Alphafold is ridiculous. These are two fundamentally different things. They are occupy the space of "AI" in that they use large datasets to train a pattern recognition machine but one is doing serious science while the other is run by a guy who has realized his best avenue to power is scaring people about how not giving him power is signing a civilizational death warrant.

Watch this when you get the time he breaks it down quite well

Alphafold may impact the consumer economy in some profound ways if they discover some interesting science but that's not what people are talking about on the news, that's not the primary discussion when it comes to AI and is not the reason these companies have such inflated stock valuations.

very few people see ai in its current state as agi, no one knows what that will ever look like and note that chatgpt 4 the first actually usable model was released march 14, 2023.

These models don't reason. None of them are reasoning it's a mistake to call what they do reasoning. They give a sophisticated appearance of reasoning but it is not actual reasoning. That is a real fundamental limit on the product as it is being marketed.

This is why it can be very good at basic tasks and why it may threaten an economy of people doing fake email jobs and bullshit busy work. It's not threatening any real economic engines that drive productivity, what it is threatening is the facade of productivity that America has crafted over the past 20 or so years, and for the people who built careers to propping up that facade it is a threat.

At the end of the day however, there will be no substantial increase in productivity because if that was something these companies were actually interested in, they wouldn't have built the facade in the first place. Any increases in profitability as a result of this "increased productivity" will go right into the pockets of the same people it has always gone into. They aren't going to have a sudden change of heart and start spreading the wealth around. If you think the factor preventing the massive increases in profitability these companies have had from reinvesting those profits into society were a lack of AI, you are hopelessly naive.

palantir is a bit archaic so using it as like modern ai isn't useful i feel like this level of surveillence was just prevented by government

Palantir is the government jfl what do you mean "prevented by the government"

Call it archaic whatever you want but companies like Palantir are making products that will have an impact on your life in you live in the western world and perhaps just the world in general, and companies like Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, etc. are simply extensions of that greater project. You are being given access to these products for free because they are funneling everything you do back into the total surveillance panopticon machine that is being built.

I dont understand just skimming you keep saying this stuff about fake email jobs acting like majority of software engineering blockers aren't team by team conflicts. I completely agree with you that the front anthropic puts up and sensationalizes is god awful and knowing that gpt 5.5 out performed its cybersecurity capability while being around 5x cheaper is crazy. I think the trillion dollar valuations are real cause no way to put up 500 billion dollars and not being valued under a trillion. Engineers on our team use up to like $2k credits a month but obviously opus 4.6 was about the most expensive model by a mile.

Like im not too sure on how extensively you used the modern tools for ai espsecially in the engineering sense r/vibecoding and r/claudecode are terrible examples because almost in all cases the person didn't do his research. People spend $500 to reverse engineer claudes mobile ui for no reason

I agree that consolidation is going to the major ai companies still any improvements you get from reverse engineering claude code will probably just go back to anthropic cause thats the whole point of generalization. Any idea spin offs of any major tech company like cursor and perplexity will just be consumed. Like what would be a solution to this that wouldn't prevent further innovation? In your original OP link this is just a singular dude.

As for the video he just restates the obvious that and I already said claude tends to be dumb but you got to be realize opus 4.6 and orchestrators/worktree just came out like feb 5. Open to criticism but when o1 released it introduced the $100-200 tier subscriptions and most people find a lot of value in these subscriptions even if you might not. Demo genuinely not even impressive the claude code projects i was talking about were much more interesting and important and can be improvements on a frontier feature

I doubt palantir will have as large of an impact as something on me PERSONALLY like a generalized model and im very against surveillence thats what made america unique something like the fourth amendment(Katz v. United States)

we talked about the progress of chatgpt3.5 to like whenever this thread edit you can see the sentiment through out change

You are aware an economy can't just be a bunch of computer engineers right?

You keep bringing up this specific use case as some sort of counterpoint but that's exactly the point I'm making. That use case is specific where the claims are that AI is generally valuable such that it warrants trillions of dollars in investments. I'm calling bs

I never said AI has zero value (or maybe I did but I'm exaggerating a bit) it clearly has value for a few things and for a few things it's incredibly valuable but that's not what we are discussing not what my main contention is

I'm saying that AI is not going to change the world the way it is being claimed to be able to do. It will have a large impact on a few professions and most others it will be unaffected

You watch the video and say Claude tends to be dumb. I'm not sure if this some sort of mistranslation or something but if what you took from that video is that the issue is that Claude is dumb then i'm not sure if there is anything I can type which would better elucidate my point

It's kind of bizarre actually that you watched that video and your first response is to criticize the model as if that's actually the issue

Genuinely not sure how that follows so am hesitant to continue the conversation at all if you don't seem to be able to identify such basic things

Again you talk about Palantir as a model? This is such as bizarre direction to take the point I'm making that I'm not sure we are communicating about the same thing. I never once mentioned the model Palantir uses or whatever because that's completely irrelevant to my point.

You may not think Palantir will have an impact on you, maybe you don't live in America, the whole point is that the goal of these companies are to infringe on our rights so arguing that we have said rights as protections is again irrelevant. You may think rights are what make America unique, so do most Americans, the problem is the companies that have a direct line to president and the CIA don't agree on that anymore

Anyway, LLM's are mostly marketing. They can't reason, they can barely have conversations of any real substance for any real length of time. They are good at code because they have consumed a bunch for code. That's what they are good at, reproducing rote work that has been done before. I already agreed multiple times that that's what they do very well, but being able to reproduce code is not going to revolutionize the economy or fundamentally alter the nature of labor, sorry.

Or well really it may revolutionize the economy but not for anything good. If it has any widespread impact it's going to be in the exact opposite direction that most people want or benefit from.

China is simply approaching it more rationally, more in line with its actual value, probably because their economy is more real so they don't need to or probably have any incentive to create fantastical narratives about the value of the technology and massively disrupt functioning industries as a result. American companies are doing the opposite, they are using the fabricated narrative about AI to justify fucking over as many people as possible.

Hence the text in the post

Yes, but it is entirely dominated by them just look at the top 50 stocks include banking stocks within swe, wells fargo hired an insane amount of engineers in 2024-2025

read the first few words btw i agreed with the video YOU are taking my words and not remembering what I said about anthropic in general

For example I think Palantir is actually an incredible company that is using AI in one of the only real ways it can be used right now, and that's in the way I just stated.

I guess we'll just disagree with that point
You are being given access to these products for free because they are funneling everything you do back into the total surveillance panopticon machine that is being built.
^ Assumption and what app doesn't ask for info they do a much better job than china in this point something like anthropic and gemini only use your data if you manually click the feedback options the whole opint of this thread
If you are an american state or federal worker you are BANNED from using deepseek

I have a friend that works for palantir, I understand their involvement its almost like their whole point is to surveil citizens, I think the valid criticisms for ICE are real and palantir are guilty of that but I fully support ICE

at the end of the day look at y combinator

I'm saying this is a potentially unhealthy state for an economy to be in and that China at least appears to recognize that while the US doesn't care and is full steam ahead (with a lot of that steam being smoke and mirrors)

It just spells bad news imo if a company needs to do something so blatantly deceptive to market their revolutionary technology

I guess that's obvious

Lol I think the future technological world that the powers at be want to create hinges on surveillance more than anything, or at least the people shaping that world don't want the power it would bring to be dispersed broadly and with no oversight.

They certainly do NOT want a massive increase in personal autonomy for every citizen.

This is why I think Palantir and companies like it are critical, they directly serve that objective.

^ Assumption
I think it's a very reliable assumption to make.

My sweet summer child

the whole opint of this thread

You are banned from using Deepseek because the government knows that China is doing the same thing they are doing with the AI, using it as a surveillance and propoganda tool.

Their whole point is to surveil citizens and develop efficient means of terminating citizens who step too far out of line. They are already doing the first thing, and are gearing up to do the second.

They have no other objectives, if they appear to have another objective it's because those objectives serve those two main purposes.

They aren't even really interested in deporting illegals. I guess they seem to be, but I'm supposed to believe the same people importing illegals are the ones who want to deport them? It's laughable.

What about Y Combinator? I don't believe that company is what it appears to be either.

Very interesting and unconventional strategy I will say but we will see how things play out 🤔
They have 1b chinko's

Obv it's gonna work for them.
