Bonded Retainers and Night Retainers Do They Affect Facial Growth, posture/Mewing, or Natural Adaptation?

I’m trying to understand how different types of retainers affect overall facial development, not just sleep posture. I want to know how bonded retainers vs nighttime retainers influence:

  • natural palate expansion
  • tongue posture (day + night)
  • swallow mechanics
  • arch stability
  • Damon expansion expression
  • hormonal facial growth
  • long‑term aesthetics
  • mewing effectiveness
  • natural forward drift
  • natural facial adaptation
My situation:

  • Damon braces finished 2 years ago
  • Original issue was pacifier‑induced overbite (not genetic crowding)
  • Palate was naturally wide, teeth were just pushed forward
  • Mild–moderate crowding at most
  • Currently have bonded retainers (canine‑to‑canine)
  • Considering switching to nighttime retainers
  • I follow Mike Mew’s advice on posture, swallow mechanics, and passive tongue posture

1. Bonded retainers

Do bonded retainers interfere with:

  • anterior tongue glide
  • proper swallow mechanics
  • suction
  • passive tongue posture
  • natural anterior widening
  • natural palate expansion
  • natural forward drift
  • arch settling
  • Damon expansion expressing fully
  • day‑time mewing effectiveness
Basically: do bonded retainers “freeze” the front teeth in a way that limits natural facial adaptation and development?

2. Night retainers

Do nighttime retainers interfere with:

  • passive tongue posture
  • palate contact
  • posterior tongue elevation
  • natural palate expansion
  • natural arch adaptation during the day
  • facial growth responsiveness
  • mewing mechanics (day + night)
  • natural forward drift
Since night retainers only sit on the teeth and don’t touch the palate, are they basically neutral for posture, growth, and natural expansion?

3. Hormonal growth (GH / IGF‑1)

Does holding the teeth in place (bonded or night retainer) affect how the face responds to hormonal growth signals?

Not asking if hormones are blocked asking if the response is affected.

Do retainers limit:

  • midface growth
  • upward growth
  • forward growth
  • cheekbone development
  • jaw growth
  • airway development
  • soft tissue remodeling
  • natural palate expansion
Or is this unrelated to tooth position?

4. Long‑term aesthetics & natural development

Is switching from bonded → night retainer better for:

  • facial development in general
  • natural palate expansion
  • tongue posture
  • airway mechanics
  • natural arch expression
  • Damon expansion stability
  • looksmaxxing outcomes
  • mewing effectiveness
  • natural forward drift
  • overall facial growth responsiveness
Especially since Mike Mew says you shouldn’t apply hard tongue pressure at night, only passive posture.

TL;DR:

I want to know if bonded retainers limit natural facial development (palate expansion, forward drift, posture, growth), and whether nighttime retainers or nothing just using my tongue or whatever else are better for long‑term aesthetics and natural adaptation not just during sleep, but overall.

Any insight or personal experience would help.

dnr but

personally i didn’t like bonded retainers, just annoyed my tongue and felt uncomfortable , now i just use the night one
