My friend is from Bulgaria and we were talking about our favourite drinks, he brought up a story of how his grandmother saw him drinking coffee and got upset at him

She told him not to drink coffee otherwise he would turn into a ‘Turk’

Is this a common belief in the balkans? Do people believe they can transform ethnicity?

I am bulgarian and this is the first time I hear this JFL. Most people are typical slave drink worshipers.

I'm a Bulgarian and Holy SHIT, this is the most retarded shit I've ever heard LMAO!!! Coffee drinking along with hardcore cigar smoking is one of the most Balkan trait you can imagine, trust me.

Back when I was a kid, in order to scare other kids off from touching cigs, there was this urban legend spreading around that smoking is going to stun your growth.

Bulgar is literally a Turkic word that means "to stir/mix"

Even the word Balkan is of Turkic origin JFL

The origin of the word Balkan is obscure; it may be related to Turkish bālk 'mud' (from Proto-Turkic *bal 'mud, clay; thick or gluey substance', cf. also Turkic bal 'honey'), and the Turkish suffix -an 'swampy forest'[9] or Persian bālā-khāna 'big high house'.[10] It was used mainly during the time of the Ottoman Empire. In both Ottoman Turkish and modern Turkish, balkan means 'chain of wooded mountains'.[11][12][13]
