Ok guys real Seth here. Gonna drop some nuggets of wisdom around structural class and how to prevent downward mobility... which essentially is interchangeable with lack of leverage, ability to be coerced/forced to do something you don't want to do, for an inadequate payoff. So remember that boyos.

Real class security is low fragility. Assets, options, competence, relationships, orderly habits, and the ability to survive a bad year matter far more than looking affluent.

So what kind of structure do you need to build for yourself???

Protect optionality. Cash reserves and low fixed costs give you negotiating power. Do not convert financial independence into lifestyle signalling.

Put prime cognition on the binding constraint in your life. Become obsessed about execution in terms of moving towards careers that create a state change in who you are.

Own more of your value. Skills, code, reputation, relationships and capital travel with you. Corporate indispensability without authority does not.

Be unusually reliable without becoming unusually exploitable. This may be the single best professional rule. And you will find out, in corporate careers, this is an incredibly hard position to be in. In most cases, more competent=more exploited=dumping ground=you LOSE more of your time and optionality.

Maintenance beats conspicuous upgrading. Clean your car. Dress well. Keep your room/house orderly. There is considerably more status in immaculate stewardship than anxious replacement.

Stop making every choice carry identity weight. The genuinely secure person can eat somewhere cheap, drive an old car, admit ignorance, associate with people across classes, and experience none of it as a threat.

Build belonging rather than access. Repeated participation, invitations both ways, shared history and reciprocal trust are much more valuable than occasionally occupying prestigious rooms.

Avoid becoming your family's chief operating officer. Help substantially, but preserve a separate adulthood.

Develop substance outside optimisation. Books, markets, technology, history, sport, places, humour, music—actual interests. Taste is accumulated attention, not expensive consumption.

Measure yourself by trajectory, not rank. Your useful question is not “Does this look upper-class?” It is: “Does this increase my autonomy, capability, relationships, or optionality?”
The golden rule below is.

Never consume the capital, be it financial, social, physical or reputational—that creates the appearance of security, merely to display security.
