Have had issues with my jaw popping for years, as well as increasingly noticeably asymmetric features, I have TMJD with reduction which is where the joint pops both in and back out depending on the movement of the jaw, for the past three days I have been practicing something called functional neutral, which is where you put your tongue slightly behind your front teeth, let your jaw hang completely relaxed, a couple cm apart. This allows both of the jaws masseter muscles to relax and become unirritated. Eventually the unbalanced muscles will even themselves out. Typically one's jaw leans towards one side due to muscular imbalances in both the jaw, and then consequently the back, that is due to the body naturally leveling out eyesight that would otherwise be crooked due to the jaws rotations . One side of the face also swells and is weaker due to lack of use, the opposite side of the way the jaw leans. Due to the mouth posture I described, my jaw less relaxed, and my bite centered slowly over a couple days, the popping reduced as well. The biggest aspect for returning my jaw to center was my neck posture, I unconsciously was tilting my head clockwise to compensate for my jaw. My tilting it counter clockwise, after a couple hours my bite and jaw has centered. It will take much longer for the muscular balances to fix, within weeks-couple months. That is normal. After prolonged time with proper neck posture and functional neutral mouth position the faces muscles will even out and stop compensating for the tilt. And your symmetry will return. Just in a couple days I noticed my nose and philtrum aligning with my front teeth and then jaw in a straight line. However one side of the musculature on my jaw is still uneven from heightened activity while it was tilted for several years. Some require pt exercises if bite centered does not return after only mouth and neck posture.

Also sleeping on back isn't cope and will swell one side of face further, chewing on one side causes muscle imbalance. Dont over do chewing on the weaker side, even on both unless weaker jaw is inflamed and popping a lot then do it on the stronger until inflammation reduces. proper posture is most important

No one is gonna read all this

I'm gonna try ts. I'm tired of being called "Mango" just bc of my jaw. I hope this works:feelswhy:

Got any before/after pics?

Not yet, my bite has centered however the musculature asymmetrical is still there from the years of the muscles having to compensate more on one side. I think it takes a couple weeks for the soft tissue and bloating to return to normal. I will post when I see changes. I did notice my head tilt completely gone and general facial mid line fixed within a day or two

I don't care if anyone reads it lol. I'm just saying what fixed my asymmetry. If someone is struggling with it and doesn't care enough to fix oh well
My jaw is kinda assymetrical and i have tmj symptoms im wondering if this is the problem

Doesn't hurt to try it. Pretty passive fix. Overtime I've noticed less clicking. The visual takes longer. But my right side is less puffy, my bite is aligned, jaw clicks less when eating, my right eye is more symmetrical, neck/head doesn't tilt

wait fixing TMJD caused asymmetry or fixed asymmetry?

I have exactly the same issue. How often and for how long did you do the functional neutral and should you sleep with your head tilted to the side with or the side without TMJD?

In the functional neutral did you open past the click or not?

Always do functional neutral, it's ur new resting position. On the side without it but on ur back is optimal

Just whatever is from the tmjd, if u have structural asymmetry like bones tmjd doesn't effect that so it wont change them
The title is kinda misleading then no u said fixing TMJD caused asymmetry

It's not. Fixing tmjd caused asymmetry yes. Not all asymmetry. There's bones and then stuff like soft tissue. U can fix the soft tissue asymmetries because that is what is effected by tmjd.

Update, since this, my jaw has stopped popping completely besides occasionally when I am eating but even that has decreased dramatically, all I did was that posture with my teeth slightly apart and jaw relaxed. Definitely more centered than when I started but will take time for all soft tissue to revert. Jaw closed more evenly, neck doesn't tilt as much

I have asymmetry on my jaw my left side bone is way bigger and stronger than my right side do i chew only on the weaker side or both still

I also have an uncentered jaw but also that my teeth on one site dont close as deep as on the other side. Did you have that aswell and if yes did it get better? I might be retarded for asking this if thats what you mean by jaw closed more evenly

wait can you show me what that looks like cuz i have tmj too

Btw on the note of asymmetry, is there any correlation between this masseter imbalance and your chin being asymmetric as well, i.e., looking like it's "shifting" a little bit more towards one side?

I mean when I opened my mouth all the way, I could feel it pulling to my right, as my muscles were stronger on that side. And as I closed it, i could feel it shift back to center. You likely grind your teeth in your sleep, causing wear on one side making your bite uneven. Go to an ortho and ask, they will get u a guard to wear at night to prevent it if that is the case

Both still. It will balance out naturally.
