Friend got hollow cheeks from smoking?

My friend used to not have hollow cheeks some months ago. He started doing jawline exercises like chewing and he started smoking. He stopped doing jawline exercises for months and his cheeks are hollow he says from smoking cause the sucking motion. Can this be true?
