how much vertical augmenation of the rim could be done until function can be impaired?

in humanspeak, what is the biological limit?

i know this is case by case, but what's the general rule of thumb
 
i guess if the biological limit is reached before the aesthetic limit, OD might be a good idea. most people wont need OD tho i guess
