I've seen a few guides that have covered this topic, but have noticed they are a bit low effort, short, don't cover the biophysical mechanisms or the actual cellular and molecular basis that enables this method to work, or fully explain the process and how to do it. All great guides though. No one really talks about UC on here and the comments about it I've seen are usually about how it works, and/or saying its cope. So here you go.

How can we spot reduce facial fat at home? Ultrasonic Cavitation.

- What is ultrasonic cavitation?
- Ultrasonic cavitation is a non-invasive solution to removing facial fat. The method includes using low frequency ultrasound waves to target fat cells under the skin, scientifically known as subcutaneous fat. The sound waves create air patches that break down membranes of the fat cells, letting the body remove the remnants through the lymphatic system via lymphatic drainage.
- But exactly what role does does the lymphatic system play in the process?
- The key to fat cavitation is lymphatic drainage. The lymphatic system plays a huge role in the treatment. The drainage system helps remove the broken down fat cells into the interstitial fluid. For starters, the released triglycerides and fatty acids are released into the liquid between cells (interstitial fluid). The body then metabolizes the fat into a glycerol, which is water soluble, and free fatty acids, which are non-soluble. What lymphatic system acts as a sort of sewer system. Drainage moves this fluid through the lymphatic vessels to the liver and then it's broken down, which makes it able to be broken down to be used for energy or excreted. Without lymphatic drainage, the broken down fat will stay in your system, and may be reabsorbed by surrounding fat cells. Drainage increases lymph flow by up to 20x the normal rate, making the removal of the excess faster. This is why this is absolutely crucial for treatment to work.
- How can we prove ultrasonic cavitation actually works?
- Multiple studies (PMIDs 25289235, 28281840, 33791639, etc.) show that low frequency (40kHz to 80kHz) ultrasonic waves can reduce fat by causing fat cavitation bubbles to appear in fat, causing fat cells to break down and be excreted in your urine. Combination with Radio Frequencies afterward has been shown to improve results. Using RF will also result in a cosmetic skin tightening effect.

- Why should we utilize this method?
- Ultrasonic cavitation is a useful method for subcutaneous face fat removal for the effect of "hollow" cheeks because it is a non-invasive, safer alternative to fat dissolvents, surgery, and peptides.
- Why is ultrasonic cavitation better than methods like Retatrutide or fat dissolvents like Aqualyx?
- Reta will cause general fat loss, but certain fat pads like the buccal fat pad don't atrophy as much as more superficial fat pads.
- Fat dissolvents like Aqualyx are effective, but they are invasive methods that require needles, opposed to the natural process of ultrasonic cavitation.
The following is very important information, compacted for ease of navigation.
Combined, the materials required should not cost more than a few hundred dollars, pending the quality and source.

Why is this needed?
A no-touch infrared laser thermometer is recommended because they provide faster readings, and so you can reduce risk of contamination of the treated area.
Why is this a necessity?
- 1. Fat cavitation machine (facial probe)
The machine creates ultrasound waves that create microscopic bubbles in fat tissue, breaking down fat cells while promoting skin tightening.
Where can you get one? These machines can often be found online easily, usually at beauty stores.
(What the device usually looks like, products may vary in looks. All devices should function the same.)
- A recommended product, on the higher quality end of the spectrum but pricier. Cheaper devices can be found, but may be lower quality. Be careful of the source you use to buy an ultrasonic cavitation device, and make sure to buy from a trusted website or seller. Fake or low quality devices will not cause harm but may not be as effective or powerful.
- 2. Conductive Ultrasound Gel
- This lets ultrasound waves travel through the skin correctly, while preventing friction between the probe and the skin and protecting the skin from overheating during the procedure. Without conductive gel, the ultrasound will not travel efficiently through the skin.
Where can you get it?- Ultrasound gel can be found very easily online or in some stores. Any gel works, just make sure you don't buy a rip off or a fake. The product is relatively cheap to buy.

- 3. Infrared Thermometer
- An infrared thermometer is used to monitor the temperature of the surface of the skin during treatment. This helps prevent overheating, helping you keep the treatment in a safe temperature range.
Where can you get this?- You can buy an infrared thermometer anywhere online or at a hardware or department store like Lowes, Home Depot, etc.
A no-touch infrared laser thermometer is recommended because they provide faster readings, and so you can reduce risk of contamination of the treated area.
- 4. Lymphatic Drainage Tools
- As I mentioned earlier, lymphatic drainage is crucial for the full excretion of fat from the body. Broken down fat is removed from your face via the lymphatic system. Using lymphatic drainage tools promotes more lymphatic drainage, which will make the treatment much more effective.
Where can you get lymphatic drainage tools?- Lymphatic drainage tools can be found anywhere online or in person at a pharmacy, superstore, or local store, (ex. Walmart, Target etc.) and are also relatively cheap. A Gua Sha and Face Roller bundle is a good example of the "tools" you can buy. Other products with the same purpose will also do the job. This part of the materials list is completely by preference and most products have the same results.
What are the risks involved in ultrasonic cavitation?
How can you prevent these things from happening?
Possible risks are of the following -
- Fibrosis/scarring
- Damage to large facial nerves during treatment
Do all of the following to prevent any damage -
- Mitigate by spacing out session 1+ weeks apart, as well as taking max efforts to promote lymphatic drainage.
- Avoid large facial nerves (see diagram below)
- Try to stick to facial regions like the cheeks and submental (under chin) region.
What are some side effects to expect or look out for?
Possible short term side effects -
- Inflammation and slight puffiness after treatment
- For 4-5 days after treatment, the area treated will become slightly inflamed. This is because triglycerides have been released into the insterstitial fluid without being drained, and goes away after full drainage has occurred.
- Acne
- Because the ultrasound gel will be on the skin for a while, there is a possibility it will irritate your skin, causing you to have a small break out. This goes away within a few days.
- Temporarily muffled hearing or ringing in the ears
- The ultrasound is very loud, and may cause very slight muffled hearing for up to 24 hours after every session. This is not permanent damage, only temporary. Slight ringing may occur for a bit after the treatment. This is also temporary. If either of these symptoms do not go away, see a professional. To prevent the risk of permanent hearing loss, make sure you use the correct frequency. This is not guaranteed, but the in the already rare case of permanent ear damage, the majority of victims used above the recommended frequency.
- Bruising on or around treatment area
- You may experience bruising on or around the area you treated. This is completely normal, and should heal in 1-3 days pending severity.
PROCESS AND AFTERCARE -
HAVE PREPARED - Facial probe, infrared thermometer, ultrasound gel, cleanup supplies, face cleaning supplies and aftercare.
COMMON TREATMENT AREAS -
- Submental region

- Superficial fat pads

- #1 - CAVITATION
- Before you start, make you you have all of your tools and supplies neatly laid out, and ready for use. Key to success is organization.
Step 1 - Preparation
- Apply a generous amount of ultrasound gel to the skin above the fat you're trying to remove. This will help you prevent burning and discomfort.
Step 2 - Fat Cavitation
- Use the cavitation device (40kHz/80kHz) to perform the ultrasound cavitation. Hold the device on the to the skin on each individual spot for 5-15 minutes per the results you want.
Note; do not use too high of a frequency, as it may cause damage to tissue as stated in the risks section. Do not treat an area for too long. It will cause damage, use the device for however much time you believe is required for the amount of fat, but do not exceed the limit of 15 minutes, because that is already the absolute max time you should be treating a spot.
WARNING: STOP TREATMENT IMMEDIATELY IF YOU EXPERIENCE PAIN OR DISCOMFORT DURING THE TREATMENT
- #2 - POST-CAVITATION
Note: it is VERY important you stay within the correct frequencies and the temperature range to avoid damage.
Step 1 - Post cavitation RF treatment (Apply 1-4mHz Radio Frequencies)
- Use the tripolar RF head and apply it to the same area you performed the fat cavitation in. This is where you'll need the infrared thermometer. Use the thermometer to make sure you're maintaining 104°F - 107.6°F (40°C - 42°C) dermal temperatures, and make sure you check every few minutes. Do this for 15 minutes after every cavitation treatment. RF treatment is crucial for results and if not done correctly can cause harm.
- #3 - POST-TREATMENT
Step 1 - Measures to increase lymphatic drainage
- To make sure the interstitial fluid is properly released by the body, there are many measures you can take. You should sleep with your head elevated, drink lots of water (at least 3-4 liters per day), and take 2-3 days off from a normal schedule to avoid any extreme physical activity.
Note: During this period, you may appear a little bloated. This is just fat broken into triglyceride components. Completely normal reaction to the treatment. These measures are optional, but if you would like to maximize your lymphatic drainage, I would highly recommend taking them.
Step 2 - Facial Cleaning
- To minimize the irritation of the skin that the conducting ultrasound gel may cause, thoroughly clean your face with water, to remove the gel solution from your face, followed by a facial cleanser to further clean your face. Make sure you use a moisturizer as well, as your skin may become dry or flaky after the treatment if you have a negative reaction to the ultrasound gel.
How fast can you expect results?
Results may vary, make sure you take into account the severity and amount of facial fat. For some, results can start to show within 2-3 sessions, and for others it make take many more, this depends completely on severity.

Why is spacing out your sessions important?
- By spacing out your sessions to 1 session per week, you can assess the results at the end of every week after inflammation and other side effects have passed from that session, giving you a buffer to examine the results while also seeing how the treatment effects you and how severe the side effects are.
