I think you are underestimating promiscuity in the past and overestimating it in the present.

There was always a minority of women who slept around. These wives cucked their husbands with the mailman, the postman, her husbands friends, etc. The majority was faithful. Today, it's still a minority who sleeps around and the majority is in monogamous LTR.
