1. IPD is the actual underlying structural spacing of the eyes, while ESR is just a ratio that depends on overall facial width.
Because of that, IPD directly affects how the midface is perceived, where as ESR can change easily depending on changes in bizygomatic width, for example:
Two people can have the exact same ESR but completely different IPDs, and the one with better actual spacing in IPD will look more harmonious
A good ESR can be achieved artificially through facial width.
Decent IPD, and bad ESR will look good 99% more of the time than bad IPD and Decent ESR.
2. If you have unideal ESR/IPD, you better fucking pray its on the larger side.
Ideal spacing > wideset > close set, and wide set is generally more forgiving than closeset.
Close set eyes compress the midface, making the central area look crowded and tighter. Wide set eyes, on the other hand, create more openness and spacing, which is perceived as less harsh, wideset eyes are also more forgiving with other features. If someone has strong cheekbones, wider spacing can still look harmonious. Close-set eyes are harder , since the crowding effect remains noticeable even if other features are strong, if you are developing during puberty, and you have close set eyes, when your bizygomatic width increases your ESR will just continously drift away from ideal, while wide set eyes on the other hand do the opposite, you drift TOWARDS ideal.
Allat said, extremes on either end look off, ideal spacing is still the goal. But if you’re comparing deviations from ideal,
Wide set is better
