I saw a comment on an old thread saying that it's impossible to get neutral mirror selfies because you're always going to have to place the camera on some awkward angle, since head on is out of the question.

This is actually not the case. You can easily get a neutral look with this procedure.
  1. Stand facing yourself in front of the mirror
  2. Place the camera on the side of your head. Try placing the lens of the camera at the same height as your eyes. We'll imagine placing it on the right of us for this post.
  3. Rotate your head (if you want to you can rotate your whole body also) to the right whilst maintaining the position of your camera
  4. Rotate your camera the same angle, but to the left
  5. Try looking into the lens of the camera through the mirror, or at least near it.
If you did everything right you will now get a neutral mirror shot. You might have to mess around a bit with how much you chose to rotate for optimal results. A more acute angle will probably produce a higher quality image, but might be more finicky to get right. I've managed to do this with my camera right next to my ear. You should of course also try standing far away from the mirror (at least 1 meter) and you don't have to match the angles and heights perfectly, they're just guidelines. Feel free to play around a bit and find something that you think looks good.

Here's an illustration from a birds eye view showing why this works. If your angles match between an orthogonal line formed by the mirror plane, then the camera direction will necessarily be met by your direct gaze from your reflection.

It might be nice for the best quality + ease of taking pics, but for everybody reading: It's very easy to do this with just your arm. If you can hold your phone up to your ear for a voice call then there's a 99% chance you can do this procedure without any tools.
