When white people tan they don't dye their hair black, wear dark contacts or kink up their hair (getting a perm the only one out of these three that happens to any extent) whereas ethnics who lighten their skin will often do things like dye their hair blond/blonde, try coloured contacts, straighten their hair and so on. People tan to make their skin glow, people whiten their skin because they're self hating and would rather look white.
